5. Glider, Piper Pawnee, and Cirrus SR20 mid-air in Colorado
- Schweizer 2-32…a three-place glider being towed by a Piper Pawnee…a single seat plane used for towing and crop dusting. The towplane and glider were proceeding on a westerly heading…traveling at about 70 mph. Glider had orange and yellow high visibility stripes.
- A Cirrus SR20 four place composite airplane with two people in it were flying on a Southern heading. Cruise is approximately 160 mph.
- The Glider had taken off from the Bolder Municipal airport.
- Visibility was 9 miles…Cirrus would take more than 3 minutes to cover that distance.
- It was planning a climb to 10,500 ft. The Airport is 5,200 ft.
- The Cirrus impacted the right side of the Pawnee towplane at approximately 8,000 ft. ASL…3,000 ft. AGL
- Glider pilot reported that both airplanes were in S&L flight and made no turns or pull ups.
- Glider pilot released and pull up and right and flew through the fire ball. Passenger said she felt heat on face.
- Glider called MayDay and returned safely to the airport.

- Cirrus would be more than 45 degrees behind straight ahead.
