New Studio
The information listed in the Audio Console section; do we know if the Axia equipment being on loan is still true in the Brick House? Nickr 17:20, 6 January 2012 (PST)
This page is going to need a massive overhaul. I'll try to keep track of equipment as we add it to the new studio. Twitcolin 14:59, 6 June 2011 (PDT)
The new equipment is arriving! Revealed on the livestream recently: Kona 3G (http://www.aja.com/products/kona/kona3g/) for the new Mac Pro Rerun machine and Blackmagic Design Compact Videohub (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/videohub/models/) BrendanG 10:55, 15 June 2011 (PDT)
jammerb stated on the livestream today that the Compact Videohub will now be replaced with a Broadcast Videohub instead BrendanG 09:46, 6 July 2011 (PDT)
Server Room Equipment?
For those of us who have interest in server/enterprise/firewall equipment, it would be nice to see a list and some pictures of the server rack & cabinet in the new studio's server room in the basement, and an explanation of the devices. Just a thought. :) Prae 12:16, 18 August 2011 (PDT)
Equipment Discussion
- I filled out most of the basics but need some blanks filled(Most places are marked with "Need Info"). How many of the Canon cameras? what stands for them? Computer info: the Audition machine(brand, size monitor)? check, is that a MBP that does skype and stickam? what black laptop is used for call screening? what brand, size monitor for tricaster? Willhall 16:00, 10 January 2009 (PST)
- I changed the recording computer to Gateway, as I have heard Leo say it many times. However I left the "Need Info" tag as i could not find where I heard it.Sjefen6 14:18, 25 January 2009 (PST)
- The studio gear page info has been added here. The questions and blanks above still need to be filled in, as well as some new ones. Just look for (Nedd Info and Accurate) on the page. I know that probably isn't the best way to post what is needed on the page. I'm new to the whole wiki thing. Also should we post Equipment to the "Other Information" section on the Home Page in place of Studio Gear? Willhall 14:48, 12 January 2009 (PST)
- I remember Leo saying the Macbook Pro was a 17" just a few days ago, am I crazy?
- If you know it is a 17" please go ahead and change it. Please check other things as well. Things aren't set in stone. Also, don't forget to sign your comments with 4 ~'s Willhall 17:43, 13 January 2009 (PST)
- clock: what kind is it? Tshirts 15:27, 18 January 2009 (PST)tshirts
- It looks a bit like an Oregon Scientific but I wouldn't stake my reputation on it. --BenFranske 21:23, 27 January 2009 (PST)
current clock is (http://www.kikkerland.com/products/big-wheel-hour-wall-clock/)
- compressor: Leo said before the Windows Weekly recording today that the compressor was an Aphex, he may have misspoken but Aphex does make compressors so it could be incorrect that it is an Alesis. --BenFranske 11:15, 22 January 2009 (PST)
I noticed some notes in parentheses were strewn throughout this article, like "(more info)". For a wiki meant to be read by others, it's not best to have notes like those out where a casual reader will see them, so I commented them out <!-- like this -->. Some of the notes were requests for more info on some items, particularly Leo's computer monitors. --Bando 23:51, 7 February 2009 (PST)
- Video SAN Equipment: The new SAN equipment that has recently been added to TWIT Cottage, Could Colleen put up a section in the Wiki about it?
Can someone with edit writes add/incorporate the new studio setup (speed rails, etc. from All In One Truck)? Leo's blog post may help: http://leoville.posterous.com/after-the-studio-upgrade Mattclare 10:09, 12 July 2010 (PDT)
Page Organization
- It might be worthwhile to think about if this page should be a list like it is now or something more verbose which explains a bit more about how each piece of equipment is used and connected at the cottage. It would also be worth discussing how changes in equipment will be handled and how much (or any) of the old setups will be documented. Eg. the Countryman mics in studio have recently been replaced by PR-40s, should they stay listed? Also it's unclear what constitutes a Live Event? Are these current things or are we talking about some of the old live shows like those done at Noonan's (sp?), the Apple Store, Podcast Expo or some of the other locations that were one-offs. It would be good to have some sort of consensus about what this page should be. --BenFranske 21:23, 27 January 2009 (PST)
- I would like to see the page like this: 1) paragraph explaining the studio/setup. I am working on a diagram that could go with that as well link to pic. 2) have a list view like we have now.(we could get rid of the live section) 3) maybe add a section of "gear no longer in use". So things like the contryman could go there(but there might not be enough stuff to constitute a new section). 4) I like the remote contributors sections as well. Would be nice to know what everyone is using.(even though most of the hosts now have the same setup) Willhall 13:14, 28 January 2009 (PST)
Question on hard drive adapter?
An IP editor asked:
"What Is the SATA Harddrive adapter that Leo always compares to a toaster?"
This was on the article page; I've moved it here. Since I'm not sure if this is referring to in-studio equipment I'm not sure it belongs on the article page even after it's been answered. Jeh 16:41, 4 June 2009 (PDT)

Upgrade to Axia audio system
On August 20, 2009 Leo will be replacing much of the Analog audio gear including the Mackie mixing board, compressors, soundcards in computers, etc. to an Audio over Ethernet solution (Axia) made by Telos. This will require massive revamping of this page and related pages. I think it would be a good idea to link to the historical versions of this page once that upgrade is complete as the "simpler" setup he has now will be of interest to some people. --BenFranske 13:30, 16 August 2009 (PDT)
- I have updated the topic page with as much info as I have on the new setup. I have no ability to create new pages; here is the information that I removed from the topic page:
- Mixer: Mackie Onyx 1640 with Firewire I/O Card
- See audio mixer configuration for details on how the Mackie 1640 is setup
- ISDN Box: Telos Zephyr Xstream MXP Digital Network Transceiver
- Mute Button: Pro Co Cough Drop, product has been renamed to the "Short Stop"
- Compressor: Aphex 230 Voice Processor. Compresses the audio for the live streams, recorded audio is compressed in post processing.
- Dell laptop: used for Flash Media Encoder for Stickam Feed - this job is now done by one of the Streamasaurus Mac minis
preserved material from FAQ live
The following was in the "FAQ live" section of the FAQ page during the Axia installation, adjustment, and tweaking. Preserved here temporarily. I think we should probably have a separate page, linked from the Equipment page, with details on the Axia, and perhaps some of this can be there.
Audio upgrade
Monday 24 Aug 2009
Kirk stayed for some more adjustments in the latter part of the day, to head home on Tuesday. The feeds to the stream encoding machines are still being worked on.
Saturday 22 Aug 2009
It's mostly done; the studio was back on the air for Dr. Kiki's show at 3 PM on Thursday and for TWiF on Friday. Tweaking will likely continue through the weekend, in between shows, but show production schedules should not be affected.
On August 18 2009 Leo interviewed Kirk Harnack of Axia Audio, who provided a good description of the new digital audio system's features and advantages; the interview is available here (100 MB download). Kirk is the great-sounding guy with long hair who is often visible on camera between shows during the Axia adjustment period.
More information on details of the new equipment will be posted to the Wiki Equipment page as it becomes available.
Thursday 20 Aug 2009
Colleen posted an early picture of the Telos Axia Element console in its new home on the right side of Leo's desk (note that the left-hand monitor belongs to the Tricaster, the right-hand to the Axia).
Colleen found time for a bit of IRC:
- [12:07] <Colleen_> there is nothing to see right now
- [12:07] <Colleen_> we are fiddling with drivers
- [12:12] <Colleen_> We are working really hard to get it done as soon as possible
- [12:12] <Colleen_> so he can be on the air maybe even today
- [12:12] <Colleen_> my goal is ot have it ready for dr kiki
Tweet from Leo at 13:17: "New Axia console is in and 5x5. Kirk and Milos are working on Skypesaurus now - NIC problems. We may be back up in time for Kiki at 3p PDT!"
Tweet from Leo at ??:??: "We are streaming the remains of the install now at http://live.twit.tv - mostly debugging now. The Axia is AMAZING!"
Tweet from Colleen at about 15:00: "Started at 8. Rebuilt the studio with tcpip bsed audio. Now it's on air as of 3pm." photo (needs rotation)
New Mic?
The Mic is a different color. Does leo have a new mic? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.5.212.103 (talk) 13:36, 25 October 2009
- It is the 'gold' version (gold plated i'm guessing) of the same Heil mic that he's always used. --Ccheath 08:51, 6 February 2010 (PST)
- To clarify, Heil sent him that. It's a special edition, and it no longer has a pop filter on it. The other studio mics are still the regular PR40s. The equipment page should probably be updated to say that. Jeh 00:54, 15 February 2010 (PST)
The clock
Although the exact SkyScan clock has not been made for several years, there is a very similar model at Target now for just $24.99. La Crosse Technology has one with a nearly identical display but a different bezel; it's at Amazon] for about the same price. Jeh 22:42, 3 March 2010 (PST)
Live stream encoders?
Can someone please mention the types of audio and video live encoders in use with the encoding profiles being used, e.g. are they multicasting MPEG transport streams etc? Thanks. --IncidentFlux 07:04, 9 July 2010 (PDT)
iPad Video Recording?
For iPad Today, what is the setup that they use to capture video and audio? Not the camera-over-the-shoulder, but the actual App(s) and/or Program(s)?
Link change
- The link to Oregon Scientific clocks is no longer valid. I suggest using this link instead: http://www.oregonscientific.com/products_timeAndweather.asp
I would change it myself but for some reason it will not allow me to edit the page directly, even though I confirmed my email address. Aaaaa 10:28, 23 January 2011 (PST)
- It had been protected so only autoconfirmed editors may edit the page. I have removed the page protection and have changed the link on the main article page. Geoffsan 20:37, 23 January 2011 (PST)
Computer converters?
- I hope to discover what solution they are using for VGA (15-pin) to SDI conversion. I have an HD, multi-camera, remote-controlled, live-switched mobile video production unit and, like the TriCaster-based setup used by TWiT, I use exclusively SDI-HD video. But how do they get from VGA (or HDMI or DisplayPort) to SDI to feed into the routing switcher? Rcrowley7 13:46, 11 December 2011 (PST)
