Topics

  • Road-trip: I'm in Durango, CO after 4 days, 2300 miles of driving
  • Windows 8 sneak peek
    • A ton of planning documents for Windows 8 have leaked online
    • Microsoft has some great ideas, but we'll see how much of it really happens
  • Microsoft: Seriously, we're huge. And we make more money than Apple and Google combined
    • It's interesting to see Microsoft formalize the conversation we had last week. This is one of those "conventional wisdom vs. reality" things.
  • Microsoft cancels the KIN after just one month on the market
    • You may recall that the target market for this phone--kids who can't pay for a phone--seemed off to me
    • KIN team, techs being rolled into Windows Phone
  • IE reverses slide, gains usage share in June - Why this is interesting
  • Hulu goes subscription, slowly - Interesting, but this is a crowded market and no one has been successful
  • iPhone 4:
    • 1.7 million sold in first three days, but a lot of "buts": Antennae issues, screen issues, most sales (~80 percent) were to existing customers. Apple's biggest fans are pretty silent about problems, but with these devices hitting a mass market, Apple may need to reevaluate how it does things.

Windows 7 Feature of the Week: Windows Troubleshooting

  • This new Windows 7 feature diagnoses and resolves common operating system and hardware issues. It works automatically, or you can visit the Troubleshooting control panel to find problems to troubleshoot. Windows Troubleshooting integrates with Action Center so you'll be notified when relevant new troubleshooters from Microsoft and third parties are made available.

Windows 7 Tip of the Week: Windows Anytime Upgrading

  • You can use Windows Anytime Upgrade to quickly and easily move from one Windows 7 version to another (up only, not "downgrade"). And yes, if you bought a TechNet (or MSDN) subscription, those keys work in WAU. This doesn't require you to reinstall anything.
