During the panel discussion in TWIG #93, about the role of Twitter in getting the word out about the Osama Bin Laden raid, Leo remarked with some surprise that some people looked to major news outlets on TV like CNN for verification. However, this is the hallmark of information literacy: to engage in critical thinking to verify or corroborate information.

I am a librarian at Community College of Philadelphia, a large urban community college on the East Coast, and we teach this very technique in our Information Literacy classes! In particular, I instruct students in my classes to consult sources that they can trust--those with authority or reliability. So, maybe without even knowing it, people on twitter who turned immediately to known, trusted new sources were practicing critical thinking and being 'information-literate'! Nice.
