Windows Weekly
Episode 100

  • Windows 7 RC news
    • Looks like it's happening in May
    • Some secret new features are coming. I can't say more.
    • Side issue: Had an interesting phone conference with Ed Bott and Joe Wilcox. Joe said something that I think is correct: With all the changes Microsoft is suddenly making to Windows 7 post-Beta, it seems that its heading back into "design-by-committee" territory. Previously, it seemed like there was an Apple-like vision to the design, where right or wrong, it was at least cohesive.
  • Windows Home Server PP2 is out
    • Minor update to original WHS software ... the last one, actually
    • Next release is a major new WHS version due in 2010, codenamed Vail
    • Just a few features: Better OOBE/new language support (for new installs only), Better remote access, better media streaming (Media Center integration and MPEG-4 support)
    • Will arrive automatically via WU, no direct download
    • Related: WHS Add-ins. There are over 100 right now and some are really good
  • Windows Mobile 6.5 update
    • Check out the MIX 09 web site for some interesting session videos and PPT downloads
    • Includes a really nice overview of Windows Mobile 6.5
    • I may have been too hasty about this release. Yes, its an interim/catch up release. But it looks decent
    • Related: I think I've settled on a plan for Windows Mobile
  • OnLive: Gaming in the cloud
    • New service will remote need for 3D hardware, high-end PCs ... and video game consoles
    • This one looks real, is backed by some serious software developers
  • Sorry Derek, Maybe we jumped the gun too fast on Jim Allchin  :)
  • Everything Must Go ... delayed one week to April 4
    • I've been too busy to get everything together in time for Saturday.... So, sorry... one more week

  • Visual search suggestions ... and multiple search providers

IE 8 is the most search engine-friendly browser there is Load it up with Google, Live Search, Yahoo!,, NYTimes, whatever Run the same search against multiple searches Web-based searches auto-populate the search box

Software Pick of the Week

  • WMWiFiRouter
    • Use your Windows Mobile phone and its 3G connection as a high-speed modem for your PC. Requires a WM 5.x or 6.x phone with both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. Will be testing this soon,(Not free: Costs 19.99 Euro.)
    • Recommended by a number of people, most recently of Derek J. Nolan of and the 2old2type Radio Podcast - aimed at the discriminating older gentlemen. :)
