Windows Weekly
Episode 121

  • Windows 7 Secrets has shipped
    • I've gotten a number of copies and will be getting more to give away, probably in late September
    • Working on a Kindle "best of" edition right now
  • Microsoft collaborated with Intel to make Windows 7 better
    • Faster boot-times, resume
    • Better battery life
    • Better multi-core performance
    • Reality: Evolutionary improvements all around. Again, Vista wasn't horrible
  • A 90-day trial version of Windows 7 Enterprise is now available
    • But only while supplies last[1]
  • VMWare vs. Microsoft
    • Some have described VMWare as Microsoft's biggest competitor
    • Join the line behind Apple, Nintendo, IBM and about 20 other companies
    • I think VMWare is in trouble and they just don't know it yet
  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 now available
    • Microsoft has shipped a free version of Hyper-V 2.0 that removes most of the previous **version's limitations. It's kind of shocking how full-featured this is.
  • Zune HD will be the only Zune device going forward
    • Microsoft discontinues "classic" Zune devices, makes a stand on the HD
    • On sale September 15
  • Windows Mobile 6.5 coming October 6
    • Numerous devices from numerous wireless carriers on that day
    • Appears to be an attempt to overcome the traditional weakness in WM; that devices are slow to market after an OS rev
  • Nokia netbook details emerge
    • And it looks overpriced

Tip of the Week

  • Use Windows 7 libraries for new "arrangement" views - From Windows 7 Secrets, Chapter 5: "You can arrange Library views in ways that aren’t possible with folders: While Libraries support the Sort by and Group by options utilized by folders, they also offer a unique visualization option called Arrange by that is not offered to traditional folders."
    • Unique to Libraries, not available in other folder views
    • Especially nice for rich media like photos: Uses stacks

Software Pick of the Week

  • WinToFlash - Automate the process of creating a bootable USB-based Windows install. Not just Windows 7: Works on XP, Vista too. Thanks to Steve G. for the tip
